Pharmacy Residency Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1) - Gulf Coast Medical Center

Purpose and Mission Statements of PGY-1 Program

Purpose Statement:The Lee Health PGY1 pharmacy residency programs will build on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Mission Statement:The residency program at Lee Health is committed to providing excellent training experiences that support the resident's clinical, academic, and professional interests. The program is dedicated to preparing future pharmacy clinicians and leaders by promoting confidence, leadership and professional skills.

Core Clinical Rotations

Required core learning experiences are four to six weeks and include the following:

  • Orientation(4 weeks)
  • Adult Medicine Block(6 weeks)
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship(4 weeks)
  • Critical Care(4 weeks)
  • Contemporary Pharmacy Practice (Decentralized)
    (4 weeks)
  • Emergency Medicine(4 weeks)

Completion of Orientation and required core rotations will allow the resident to choose five months of elective rotations as well as one non-direct patient care rotation.

Non-direct patient care rotations are four weeks, residents choose one from the following:

  • Pharmacy Practice Leadership
  • Pharmacy Administration
  • Medication Safety
  • Informatics

The resident may choose to do more than one rotation in a given practice area; however, the rotation must provide a different learning environment or patient population. The resident is encouraged to select elective rotations to provide a breadth of experience; therefore, one elective rotation must be an adult acute care rotation with a maximum of three rotations allowed within a specific patient population and not more than two non-direct patient care rotations.

  • Education and Precepting
  • Family Medicine
  • Geriatric Psych
  • ID Consult
  • Neonatal ICU
  • Neuro ICU
  • Oncology
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Pediatric ICU
  • Pediatric Infectious Disease
  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Pediatrics
  • Surgical/Trauma ICU
  • Transitions of Care
  • Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability.

In addition to the core clinical rotations, residents will complete the following longitudinal experiences:

Clinical Practice Advancement (11 months)

This learning experience will give the resident practical experience in the application of the medical literature combined with clinical judgment and input from affected disciplines to affect clinical outcomes of patients on a global level. Residents will participate in the following activities throughout the residency:

  • Formulary monograph and/or drug class review development and presentation to the Pharmacy Clinical Practice Council, Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and other committees as applicable
  • Quality improvement efforts in support of drug use policy including medication use evaluations, performance improvement projects, development or revisions of Lee Health pharmacy guidelines or reference documents, and other ongoing clinical projects
  • Review and/or development of policies, procedures or orders sets to improve patient outcomes and/or patient safety
  • Residents will submit a completed Medication Utilization Evaluation (MUE) for poster presentation at the ASHP Midyear Meeting.

Project Management (11 months)

Each resident is required to complete a quality research project to enhance the residents' professional growth and benefit the department through innovative changes in the way pharmacy is practiced. A primary project advisor is selected depending on the project type and location and the project advisor will help guide the resident throughout the year. The research project will be presented by the resident to members of the Department of Pharmacy and at the Florida Residency Conference in the Spring.

Pharmacy Administration (10 months)

Residents will rotate to a different Administration preceptor who will focus on one to two main areas of Pharmacy Administration. The goals, objectives, activities and projects are specific to the focus area taught by the preceptor, but are designed to build upon each other over the course of the residency year. Focus areas for the year include but are not limited to: Medication Use Process, Medication Safety, Quality/Performance Improvement, Legal and Regulatory Compliance, Human Resources, Informatics, and the Business of Pharmacy.

Pharmacy Practice Leadership Seminar (7 months)

Residents will focus on personal leadership and habits for personal success, organizational leadership and transformation change management. Residents will gain an understanding about issues in leadership and how to constructively handle their own typical human emotional responses to leadership situations. Residents will learn practical skills and analyze their own abilities in developing a personal leadership vision. Learning methods include reading, discussion, reflective writing, and ongoing interaction with managers and leaders.

Pharmacy Practice Experience (12 months)

The resident will fulfill the pharmacy practice experience requirements by providing pharmacy services at the designated campus. Pharmacy practice experience begins in July and is completed in June. One mid-day shift from 4:30-8:30pm a week/3 weeks a month and two 8 hour shifts one weekend a month. Weekend pharmacy practice experience requirements do not entitle the resident to any additional time off during the week.

In addition, each resident will be required to staff one of the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day. Residents will be off all major holidays unless he/she chooses to work.

Teaching Activities and Teaching Certificate Program

Residents are expected to participate in various teaching activities. The purpose of such activities is to foster development and refinement of the resident's therapeutic knowledge base, communication/presentation skills, literature evaluation skills, and to promote the effectiveness of the resident as a teacher/presenter. Required teaching activities include the following:

  • Residents will complete the ACPE accredited Lee Health Teaching Certificate Program.
  • Residents are required to prepare and present a one hour ACPE accredited continuing education program to the pharmacy department.
  • Residents will serve as a liaison to other departments within the health-system to provide education on pharmacy services, initiatives or drug information when appropriate. Each rotation may have a component of teaching responsibilities as designated by the preceptor at the beginning of the rotation.
  • Residents will participate informal precepting of IPPE and APPE students.
