Related to The Rehabilitation Hospital
At Lee Health we provide all the resources you need for your current or future care at the Rehabilitation Hospital.
It happens when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted. At that point, patients can either suffer from an ischemic stroke or a hemorrhagic stroke. “An ischemic stroke occurs when the blood vessel is blocked therefore depriving the brain of oxygen and nutrients. This kind of stroke accounts for about 85 percent of strokes.
A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when there’s bleeding inside the brain, usually from a ruptured blood vessel. This kind of stroke accounts for about 15-20 percent of strokes,” said Dr. Bryant Vuong, a physiatrist with Lee Health.
Regardless of the type of stroke, patients typically need to undergo inpatient rehabilitation. “This involves an interdisciplinary team which is comprised of a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, a psychologist, certified nursing, and care managers,” he said.
Patients normally stay in the hospital for 13 days after a stroke—during that time they will do three hours of therapy a day. “The goals or inpatient rehabilitation is to safely discharge a patient home and reintegrate back into the community,” said Dr. Vuong.
But even after returning home, doctors say, patients may still need additional care and therapy to fully recover from a stroke. “After the first stroke, a person is at risk of having another stroke. So it’s very important to continue with physical examination with a specialist like a neurologist or a rehab physician or your primary care physician,” he said.
Regular physical activity, a healthy diet, and abstaining from smoking and alcohol can help to lower your risk for a stroke.
